Often Forgetting Is Not Normal, Recognize Symptoms and Immediately Treat Dementia
- PT Eisai Indonesia (PTEI) and the Association of Indonesian Neuroscientists (PERDOSSI) Launch #ObatiPikun as Educational Campaign and Launch E-memory Screening( (EMS) as Early Detection Method
Jakarta, 14 September 2020 - Dementia is a syndrome of decreased brain function that affects cognitive function, emotions and behavior in daily activities[1]. Currently, in the world, more than 50 million people have dementia and Dementia Alzheimer's is the most common type of dementia, about 60-70%.[2] People often refer to this condition as Pikun. Pikun is often considered common among the elderly so that Alzheimer's dementia is often not detected, even though the symptoms can be experienced from a young age (early on-set demensia). Early detection helps sufferers and their families to better cope with the effects of decreased cognitive function and the psycho-social effects of the disease. In addition, early Alzheimer's treatment is also important to reduce the acceleration of dementia. In order to Alzheimer's Awareness Month on this September, PT Eisai Indonesia and PERDOSSI held an educational campaign called #ObatiPikun and introduced early detection methods for Alzheimer's Dementia through EMS (E-memory screening).
Ketua Umum Pengurus Pusat (PP) PERDOSSI, DR. dr. Dodik Tugasworo P, SpS(K) said in his speech, "Although dementia is mostly experienced by the elderly, this condition is not normal. Alzheimer's dementia is a major cause of disability and dependence in elderly people on others. This disease has a physical, psychosocial, social and economic impact not only on the sufferer but also on the family and the surrounding environment. The estimated number of people with Alzhemeir Disease in Indonesia in 2013 reached one million people. That number is expected to double by 2030, and to four million by 2050. Instead of decreasing, the trend of Alzheimer's dementia sufferers in Indonesia is increasing every year. Lack of awareness and understanding of Alzheimer's dementia results in stigmatization and barriers to diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, continuous education to the public and health workers is very important. Collaboration with various parties can expand the scope of education. PERDOSSI with PT. Eisai Indonesia conducts this #ObatiPikun educational campaign and hopes that it will be useful to increase awareness about Alzheimer's Dementia.”
President Director PT Eisai Indonesia (PTEI), dr. Iskandar Linardi, said in his speech , “PTEI has a human health care (hhc) philosophy and has contributed to public health in Indonesia for 50 years. PTEI is committed to providing education about Alzheimer's Dementia, especially because this disease can be detected early so that it can be treated as soon as possible. Welcoming this year's Alzheimer's Awareness Month and in celebrating the 50th anniversary of PTEI, together with PERDOSSI held the #ObatiPikun educational campaign and developed E-memory Screening (EMS) which doctors and community people can do to facilitate the detection of Alzheimer's Dementia so it can be treated immediately.”
Ketua Studi Neurobehavior PERDOSSI, dr. Astuti, Sp.S(K), said “Dementia Alzheimer's disease has modifiable risk factors such as vascular disease: hypertension; metabolic: Diabetes, dyslipidemia; after head injury, low education, depression and what cannot be modified, namely old age, genetics, namely having a family with Alzheimer's dementia. Apart from knowing the risk factors, it is also important to realize that Alzheimer's dementia is chronic progressive, meaning that brain damage increases with age. So that early detection is very important for Alzheimer's dementia. With early detection, patients can be treated more quickly so that brain damage due to Alzheimer's can be slowed down. "
Dokter Spesialis Saraf, dr. Pukovisa Prawiroharjo, Sp.S(K) said, "The beautiful memory of every human being is an invaluable asset, so it needs to be cared for and preserved as long as possible, so that the harmony of self, family and society is well preserved. In the era of information technology, it is inevitable for experts to use it in solving national health problems. One of them is the prevention of dementia / dementia starting from early detection to providing massive education to the public about dementia and how to effectively and efficiently care for the quality of life of People with Dementia (ODD) as best and as long as possible. The collaboration of communicative experts and information technology will be able to keep the good memories of ODD as long and as possible, also prevent those who start showing mild symptoms of cognitive impairment from falling into dementia. We are innovating by developing an E-MS (E-Memory Screening) application which is expected to be a mass test for everyone to detect quickly and as early as possible the possibility of leading to dementia. E-MS as an application will be officially launched on September 20, 2020, and will be available for download on the Playstore and Appstore. If the E-MS score shows that it leads to abnormal, this application also provides a trusted referral directory feature to experts around GPS-based application users including distance information, doctor's name and expertise in the field of dementia, and a hospital call center where the practice can be contacted. In addition to early detection, this application will provide a variety of reliable and up-to-date information about dementia, using language that is easy to understand in order to enlighten the public and provides tips and tricks for treating ODD effectively and efficiently. "
Medical Pharmacovigilance and Regulatory Director, PT Eisai Indonesia (PTEI), dr. Edmond Maramis said, " As part of PTEI's commitment to educating the public about Alzheimer's Dementia since 1999, we have also added to the comfort of patients by changing our dosage forms into evess tablets, and for the sake of making it easier for all levels of society to get treatment, since 2016 it has been registered with BPJS Kesehatan. And in commemoration of Alzheimer Awareness Month and the 50th anniversary of PTEI we are holding a #ObatiPikun campaign. This campaign consists of education to the media which is carried out today and to health and lay workers in the Digital Festival which will be held on September 20, 2020. The hope is that more and more people will know about the disease and symptoms of Alzheimer's dementia and immediately take action in consultation with a doctor to make early detection and get recommendations for immediate treatment.
